Fiber Art: Rugs, Tapestries, Table Runners and Basketry
Biography: Jan Harrison is a retired elementary school teacher with a passion for all types of fiber. She has been interested in fiber for 25+ years first knitting and progressing to weaving on a large floor loom and basketry. Her love of learning has continued in workshops to improve weaving techniques both as a student and teacher. Teaching others to excel in weaving is gratifying. She has moved from making traditional rugs to abstract tapestry and from weaving vessels to free form sculptural basketry.
Artist Statement: As a weaver on a loom there is frustration inherent in the nature of the beast. One weaves in a straight line again and again. I love curves, movement, and texture. I have done extensive experimentation in achieving movement and using yarns of many sizes and textures. I use the same movement and texture in my basketry as well as at the loom. Look for unexpected materials, shapes and colors. |
